“Crisis” and “Hope” in Ethnicity Research of Malaysian Chinese Literature

In order to promote understandings and interests to overseas Chinese literature, School of Humanities had invited professor You JunHao from Chinese department of Nanyang Technological University to take a lecture in Xipu campus x8120 on October 30. The theme of this lecture was“Ethnicity inMalaysian Chinese Literature: the construction and misunderstandings in research field”. According to knowledge accumulation and experience, professor You had demonstrated research errors in criticism to Malaysian Chinese Literature caused by ethnicity problems in the last twenty years.

To start with the lecture, the word“diaspora” was introduced. Professor You said that“diaspora” means people scattered throughout the world and build their home, but they are neither devour the local culture nor obstinately attach importance to their own culture only. So it is feasible to understand Malaysian Chinese Literature from the sight of diaspora. Then, professor You had showed three research models for ethnicity research in Malaysian Chinese Literature and discussed their shortcomings and dilemma in theories. He pointed that the birth of Malaysian Chinese Literature was not a simple imitation from China, it attained development by making sure its connotation and then referred to Chinese culture. The core issue we should figure out in Malaysian Chinese Literature research is how to give a definition to“ethnic Chinese (overseas Chinese )”.

Teachers and students made a speech enthusiastically after the lecture. Professor Duan Congxue from our School discussed the similarities and differences in teaching method of two counties. On October 31, professor You and leaders and some teacher from School of Humanities made an informal discussion about further bilateral communications and cooperation.
