He graduated from Chinese Department of Southwestern Normal University in January, 1982. He was once the Dean of School of Arts and Communication, SWJTU. Now, he is the Director of “Modern Design and Culture Research Center” of Sichuan Social Science Key Research Base; member of the Member of the arts committee of national higher education teach-yourself testing steering committee, member of review committee of art project by National Social Science Fund (2016), Vice President of National College Chinese Research Institute, Vice President of Sichuan Comparative Literature Association, and Vice President of Sichuan Luxun Research Association.
Xu Xingyan has long engaged in teaching and studying comparative literature and culture, Chinese modern literature and theory of literature and art. He has obtained lots of aggressive research results in expressionism and Chinese literature of 20th century, comparison between Chinese and western cultures, studies of Lu Xun, expressionist poetics research, etc., which have been quoted by thousands of kinds of domestic and foreign journals, academic dissertations and writings. He has authored over 10 textbooks and many monographs, such as Expressionism and Chinese Literature of 20th Century, Comparison between Chinese and Western Cultures, national self-examination state-compiled textbooks Writing (chief editor), New College Chinese (chief editor), Comparative Literature (chief editor). Over 50 academic papars have been published in major academic conferences, publications anf journals like Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art, Comparative Literature in China, Luxun Research Monthly, and Chinese and Foreign Culture and Literary Theory. He was in charge of editing Transcultural Dialogue Series and Cultural Quality Education Series for Chinese College Students. He has won 4 second and tried award of Outstanding Research Award of Sichuan Governmental Philosophy and Social Sciences, and the First and Second Award of Sichuan Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, as well as the Second Award of Excellent Teaching Materials Award of Ministry of Railways.
In recent years, Xu Xingyan have hosted more than 10 National Social Science Fund and provicial projects, including major projects of National Social Science Fund: studies on Chinese imagination and China's motives in German expressionist literature (2017), and general project of National Social Science Fund: study of expressionist poetics (2006), receiving scientific research funds over 2,000,000 yuan in total. The results of many of his studies have been evaluated as “Excellence”.
